Kerin, the owner of Shine ~ At the Salon, has been in the business for 28 years. She specializes in haircuts, color, and men’s and women’s face and body waxing, especially eyebrow emergencies (and believe me, there is such a thing).
After graduating from Mt. Hood Community College for hair design in 1990, and having completed an apprenticeship as an esthetician at Vic Wolfe’s Salon, Kerin opened At the Salon in 1990. Originally located on Northwest 23rd Avenue, the salon moved NW 21st and Glisan in 1993. After over 20 years in NW Portland she decided to make the move to the “up and coming” SE area. With this new move came the new name “Shine”.
Kerin uses Goldwell and Blazings color lines and KMS, Goldwell, Iden, Rusk, and Nioxin for styling and retail. About her hairstyling philosophy, Kerin says,
“I believe good hair should not only reflect your personal style, it should reflect your lifestyle as well. I enjoy taking the time to get to know my clients’ needs. Good hair should be everyday, not just when you’re walking out of the salon. I also believe that when you feel good about how you look, that kind of confidence can change your life for the better.”
Kerin is a native Oregonian, growing up in Tigard where her parents still live. She lives in Southwest Portland with her husband Michael and their three cats. Kerin has been involved in traditional Japanese Karate for almost thirty years. She’s taught a “women’s only” traditional Karate and self-defense class since 2001, allowing women and girls from the Muslim community an opportunity to train in a traditional martial art.
